Choosing a bottom bait rig

The main differences between ready tied rigs are hooklink length, material and how the hook is mounted. A 15 to 20 cm rig suits most situations, shorter for PVA bags and longer over soft bottoms.

On a blowback rig the hair ring slides along the hook shank, making it harder for the fish to eject the hook. A line aligner turns the hook quickly into the bottom lip. Coated hooklinks tangle less, uncoated ones are more supple and less visible.

Match the hook size to the bait and swap the rig if the point is damaged. Barbless versions are available for waters where they are required. Carry several rigs so you can change quickly after a fish.
