Leads & Lead Systems

The lead takes the rig to the spot, holds it in place and helps the hook take hold. In this group you will find swivel and inline leads, distance leads, marker leads and backleads, as well as lead clip systems and parts for helicopter, chod and running rigs. The shape of the lead and how it is attached are chosen to suit the casting distance and the bottom.

How do you choose a lead and a lead system?

A swivel lead attaches to a lead clip and is the most common choice in carp fishing. With an inline lead the line runs through the lead itself, so the fish feels the weight immediately and the hook sets itself. Distance leads are shaped to fly a long way, and a marker lead is what you use to map the bottom.

A backlead pins the main line to the bottom between the rod and the rig. It keeps the line out of the way of fish and boats and makes the swim feel calmer for wary carp.

A lead clip system is the safe standard option because it releases the lead if the fish reaches snags or the line breaks. In helicopter and chod set-ups the rig can slide along the leader, so it settles on top of a soft bottom instead of sinking into it. On a running rig the fish can take line through the lead.

Choose the weight of the lead to suit the casting distance and any flow, and remember to follow the rules of your fishing permit on lead.
