How do you bait a carp swim effectively?

Good baiting starts with knowing the swim. With a marker float and a feature finding lead you can work out depth, the type of bottom and where the weed beds begin and end. Distance sticks then let you transfer that distance to every rod, so your rig and your free offerings land in the same spot cast after cast.

The amount of bait and the range decide which tool to use. Close in, a catapult or a baiting spoon puts bait accurately onto a small area. A throwing stick is the classic way to spread boilies when the distance grows. When you need to introduce a lot of bait or the spot is a long way out, a spod or baiting rocket delivers particles, pellets and crushed boilies in one go.

PVA dissolves in water and leaves a pile of bait right next to the hook. A PVA bag gives you a compact heap of feed around the rig, mesh lets you build longer sticks of bait, and tape or string ties a few boilies close to the hook. Moisture ruins PVA, so keep it dry and use it with dry or oil-based baits.

Bait preparation affects how your feed behaves in the cast and in the water. Buckets and mixing bowls keep your mixes organised, a riddle separates the fine particles from the larger ones, and a crusher or boilie cutter turns baits into the right size for the spod or a PVA bag.

Start with a modest amount and add more once you know the fish are there. Heavy baiting can slow down the takes when the carp have plenty of free food to choose from.
