How to organise your carp gear

Rods are the most valuable and most fragile part of your kit, so protecting them is the place to start. A rod holdall takes several rods ready rigged with reels attached, so on the bank all you need to do is put them on the pod. A quiver is a lighter option for short sessions, while single rod sleeves and reel protectors keep a rod safe in the boot of the car or on the way to the swim.

How you store small items decides how quickly you get a fresh rig in the water. In a rig box, finished rigs stay straight and apart, and in a tackle box with compartments, hooks, swivels and tubing are easy to find even by headlamp. A lead bag keeps heavy leads in one place so they do not damage anything else, and waterproof storage protects items that do not like damp.

Carryalls and rucksacks take care of the rest. A large carryall swallows food, clothing and bulkier items, while a rucksack keeps your hands free when the walk to the swim is long. Bait bags carry boilies and pellets, EVA bags are watertight and easy to wash, and a cool bag keeps bait and food fresh on a warm day.

When choosing luggage, think about how long your sessions are and how your kit gets to the water. If you use a barrow, look for bags that stack on it securely and do not shift on rough paths. Matching sizes also help you pack the car efficiently.

Once every item has its regular place, packing becomes routine, setting up in the dark is easier and nothing gets left at home.
