An inshore rod is the all-rounder for fishing from rocky shores, piers and island coastlines. In this group you will find sea bass and light saltwater rods as well as shore jigging rods. The lighter rods are for fishing lures close in, while shore jigging rods cast heavy jigs a long way.

Sea bass and light saltwater rods are sensitive and light, so they are comfortable to cast all day. They suit plugs, surface lures, spoons and small jigs for species such as sea trout, sea bass, mackerel and cod in shallow coastal water.
Shore jigging rods are longer and stiffer. They are used to cast heavy metal jigs far from the shore and work them in deeper water when fish are feeding at range or in a tide race. The extra power also helps when a big fish has to be turned away from the rocks or the kelp before the line parts.
Choose the rod to suit your lure weights and the places you fish. Check the casting weight, length and action, and pair the rod with a well-sealed saltwater spinning reel and braid. Rinse the rod and reel in fresh water after every trip to keep the guides and reel seat in good condition.
