Which line and leader for sea fishing?

In sea fishing the main line is usually braid. It has virtually no stretch, so bites register even in deep water and every movement of a jig or pilk is transferred straight to the lure. A thin braid cuts through the current better than a thick line and helps you cast further. Monofilament, on the other hand, stretches, tolerates abrasion and forgives sudden lunges, which is why it is still widely used for bottom fishing, surfcasting and trolling.

A leader is almost always tied to the end of a braided main line. Fluorocarbon is hard for fish to see and stands up to abrasion from rocks, mussel beds and the mouths of fish, while a mono leader is more supple and easy to knot. A shock leader absorbs the load of a hard cast with a heavy lead, and a wind-on leader is joined to the main line so the connection runs smoothly through the rod guides. A wire leader is needed when the target species has sharp teeth.

Pre-made leaders save time on the shore and in the boat, because the right leader is ready to use straight away. If you prefer to build your own, the leader components section has crimps and other parts for attaching heavy mono or wire securely without a knot.

Choose the line strength according to the target species, the type of bottom and the weight of the lures you use. Check the leader after every fish and every contact with the bottom, and replace it as soon as you feel nicks or twists in the surface.
