Which tools do you need for sea fishing?

Sea fishing tackle is heavier than what you use on inland waters, and that makes good tools all the more important. Large split rings, thick leaders and strong hooks cannot be bent with your fingers, and salt water quickly corrodes metal that is not properly protected. That is why it pays to choose tools that are made for saltwater use from the start.

Split ring pliers let you change hooks and rings on jigs, pirks and lures without damaging your nails or fingers. Heavy duty pliers help with unhooking and with tight knots. Braid is slick and tough, so a dedicated braid cutter is the easiest way to cut it cleanly and quickly.

If you tie your own traces and rigs, crimping pliers and rigging tools are essential. A crimp secures the loop in a heavy mono or wire leader, and using jaws of the right size matters so the connection holds under the strain of a big fish.

A fillet knife is for preparing the catch on the shore or in the boat, while a bait knife cuts bait strips. Jigging and leader gloves protect your hands when line runs through your fingers or when you grab the leader of a big fish alongside the boat, which is a common moment for cuts and burns.

Rinse your tools in fresh water after every trip, dry them and oil the joints when needed. Keep the most important ones on your belt or in a bag within easy reach, so they are ready the moment you need them.
