Swivel & Inline Leads

A swivel lead has a swivel moulded in for attaching to a lead clip, while on an inline lead the line or leader runs straight through the centre. Both are carp fishing essentials for self-hooking rigs. Small balancing weights for rigs are also in this group.

Swivel or inline lead?

With an inline lead the weight sits directly above the rig, so a carp feels it straight away and the hook goes home efficiently. The shape is streamlined and casts accurately. Inline leads also work well with PVA bags.

A swivel lead clips onto a lead clip and can drop off if a fish runs into a snag. It is the more flexible set-up, as you can change lead size without retying the rig.

Choose weight by range and bottom: 70 to 85 g is a common choice, while studded gripper leads hold on slopes and in flow. Tungsten putty and small pop-up weights, by contrast, are for balancing the hookbait itself.
