Lever drag or star drag for trolling?

Trolling and lever drag reels are heavy conventional reels used to tow lures behind the boat. With a lever drag, drag pressure is set with a lever, and many models have a preset strike position from which you can add drag in a controlled way during the fight. A star drag reel is often a lighter and simpler option for lighter trolling.

Big game reels are built for large ocean species such as tuna, sailfish and marlin. They offer large line capacity, a powerful drag and often a two-speed gearbox, so you can pump a fish up with power or recover line quickly. Harness lugs let you fish with a harness when a long fight calls for it.

Choose the reel to match the line class of your rod, and service the drag and bearings regularly, because salt water and the heat from long fights wear them down. Rinse the reel in fresh water after every trip and back off the drag for storage to protect the drag washers. A well maintained reel keeps its smooth drag when it matters most.
