How to keep your sea reel in working order

A spare spool is handy when you use the same reel for different kinds of fishing. One spool can carry thin braid for light jigging and another heavier line for tougher work, and the switch takes moments in the boat or on the shore.

Power knobs are a common upgrade when fishing heavy jigs or fighting big fish. A larger knob gives a firmer grip, so your hand does not tire as quickly during long sessions of jigging or a hard fight.

With spare parts you can replace a worn drag washer, bearing or other component without buying a new reel. Always check that the part fits your exact reel model, and service the reel regularly, because salt water wears parts much faster than fresh water does. A little maintenance before and after the season goes a long way towards a longer reel life, and a spare drag washer or two in the tackle box can save a trip.
