Saltwater baitcaster or conventional boat reel?

Saltwater baitcasting reels are compact and light, and they suit casting with lures as well as light jigging. The reel sits on top of the rod, so it is easy to work lures accurately all day long.

Boat, jigging and bottom fishing reels are built heavier. They are used to drop a pirk, jig or bottom rig to the seabed and to bring fish up from deep water. A freespool lever lets line out quickly, while a solid drag and strong gearing handle the fight with big cod, pollock and other bottom species.

Choose the reel to suit the depth you fish and the weight of your rig. The deeper the water and the heavier the pirks, the more attention you should pay to line capacity and gear ratio. Before buying, check whether the reel is right or left handed, and rinse it in fresh water after every trip so salt does not build up inside.
