Braid or monofilament as your saltwater main line?

Saltwater braid is now the most common choice for jigging, pilking and casting. Non-stretch braid transmits the feel of the bottom and every bite, and its thin diameter reduces the effect of the current, so the lure stays closer to the depth you want. A colour-coded braid shows at a glance from the boat how much line is out and how deep the lure is working.

Monofilament stretches and resists abrasion, which is an advantage for bottom fishing, surfcasting and trolling. The stretch cushions the lunges of a big fish and reduces the risk of the hook pulling out right next to the boat.

It is almost always worth adding a leader to braid, because braid does not tolerate abrasion from rocks and mussels. Spool the line tightly and evenly so that it does not dig into the lower layers when a heavy fish is pulling.

Rinse the reel and line in fresh water after every trip, and the line will last longer.
