Leaders & Leader Materials

A leader protects the main line from abrasion, casting shock and the teeth of fish. In this group you will find fluorocarbon and mono leaders, heavy shock and wind-on leaders, and wire leaders. The material is chosen according to your fishing style, the bottom and the target species.

Which leader material for which kind of fishing?

Fluorocarbon is hard for fish to see and resists abrasion from rocks, mussels and the mouths of fish well, so it is the most common choice to follow a braided main line in casting and jigging. A mono leader is more supple, knots easily and works well in trolling and in bottom fishing rigs, for example.

A shock leader is a heavier length of line that absorbs the jolt of casting a heavy lead or jig. A wind-on leader is joined to the main line without a bulky knot, so the connection can be wound through the guides onto the spool and a big fish can be brought close for landing.

A wire leader is the right choice when the teeth of the target species would cut through a standard leader.

Check the leader regularly and replace it if you feel nicks in the surface. Carry enough of your usual strength so that you can re-tie a fresh leader straight away on the water.
