How to choose the right crimp

On heavy leader a crimped join is more reliable than a knot, which weakens stiff line and wire. The key is matching crimp size to leader diameter. Too loose and it slips, too tight and it cuts the material.

A double crimp is designed for forming loops: the leader passes through twice for a neat, strong connection. Single crimps are used when the tag end is wrapped back or two crimps are fitted in a row.

Close the crimp with crimping pliers whose jaws match the crimp size. Ordinary pliers flatten it unevenly.

Always test the finished join with a firm pull.
