When a ready-made leader makes sense

Time in the boat soon disappears into tying knots with cold fingers. A ready-made leader is already measured and tested, so a change takes seconds and you are fishing again.

Choose by the terminal end: a leader with a snap is quickest if you swap pirks or jigs often, while a split ring version is stronger and suits heavy pirks and big fish.

Thick 1.0 to 1.5 mm leader stands up to the mouths of cod and pollock, rough ground and a spinning fish, even a big one.

Carry a few spares, because snags are part of fishing over rocky ground.
