Marker Floats & Feature Leads

How do you find features with a marker float?

With a marker set-up, a heavy lead is dragged along the bottom and braided line transmits every knock to the rod tip. Hard gravel feels like a sharp tap, while silt and weed feel soft and heavy.

When you find a good spot, let the float rise to the surface and count the depth down a metre at a time. The float stays out as a target to cast and bait to. Clip up the line so you can find the spot again.

A feature finding lead on its own lets you feel the bottom with a normal rod too. In the margins a prodding stick tells you the bottom type in seconds, and a marker buoy keeps your baited spot in view.
