How to choose pliers and cutters for coarse fishing

Fishing pliers are a versatile tool. You use them to pinch shot onto the line, open and close rings and hold small parts in place while tying. A narrow nose is useful when handling small shot and fine lines, and stainless materials cope well with damp banks.

Line scissors and braid cutters cut line cleanly, leaving a short tag end that does not snag. Ordinary scissors can flatten braid, so it is worth using sharp cutters made for the job. Mono and fluorocarbon lines cut well with small line scissors.

Clip your scissors to your jacket or seatbox with a retractor, and they will always be within reach. Wipe your tools dry after each session so the blades stay sharp and the joints keep moving freely. A drop of oil on the hinge now and then helps too. Carrying a spare pair of scissors in the seatbox means a lost pair never ends a session early.
