A feeder puts groundbait and hookbait into the same spot cast after cast, and that is what makes feeder fishing so effective. The method feeder is a favourite at commercial fisheries and for carp-like species. Groundbait or pellets are pressed around the feeder with a mould, and a short hooklength keeps the hookbait right next to the pile of feed. The fish find the hookbait while feeding on the groundbait, and many hook themselves. A hybrid feeder sits between a method feeder and a cage feeder: it holds more bait and flies steadily through the air on the cast.
Cage and window feeders are the standard patterns in feeder fishing. The groundbait breaks out of them quickly, so food and fish build up in the swim fast. An open end feeder is filled with maggots, casters, seeds or pellets and plugged at both ends with groundbait, which holds the contents in place until the feeder reaches the bottom.
On a river, the feeder has to hold its position in the flow, so river feeders carry a heavier, often flat-bottomed weight. Distance feeders are shaped to fly far and straight. A blockend or maggot feeder is closed, and the maggots only crawl out of its holes once it is on the bottom. A pellet feeder releases pellets in a controlled way at the same spot, cast after cast.
Choose the feeder weight to suit casting distance, flow and the casting weight of your rod. A feeder that is too light will move on the bottom, while one that is too heavy puts strain on the rod and line.
When the feeder is attached with a quick change connector, switching to a different weight or pattern to suit the weather or the mood of the fish takes only a moment. Carrying a few patterns in two or three weights covers most situations.
