Measuring tape or measuring mat?

A measuring tape is light and compact, so it fits easily in a pocket or a seatbox drawer. It suits occasional use and checking the length of smaller fish.

A measuring mat is a soft surface with a printed scale. The fish is laid on the mat and the length is read straight off the scale. At the same time, the mat protects the fish, so measuring and photos can be done quickly and safely.

Measure the fish from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail and keep it as straight as possible. Wet the measuring surface before use and keep the fish low at all times, so it cannot fall. A quick photo next to the scale is a good way to record your catch before the fish goes back into the water.

Keep the mat or tape somewhere easy to reach, so a fish is never out of the water longer than it needs to be.
