How do you choose a fishing set for a child?

For a young child a reel-less pole kit is the easiest option: the float is simply swung out and there is no reel to tangle. A combo with a closed-face reel is a good next step once they want to learn to cast.

Match rod length to the child. Around 1.5-2 m is easy to handle, and a telescopic model fits in a rucksack.

Bright colours make the rod easy to spot on the bank and add to the fun. Check that line, float and hooks are included.

Teach safe hook handling and always use a life jacket on the jetty.
