A weigh sling cradles your carp all the way from the mat to the scales, while a retention sling holds it safely in the margin for a short spell before photos. You will find dedicated weigh slings, retention slings and combination designs that do both jobs.

Size the sling to the fish you expect: a big carp needs a long, wide sling so it lies flat without bending. Floating designs and strong carry handles make lifting and returning fish much easier.
Retention slings should use soft, fine mesh so water flows through without damaging fins or scales. Always stake the sling securely, keep the fish in deep, shaded water and retain it only briefly.
Wet the weigh sling first and zero the scales with the damp sling attached for an accurate reading. A combination sling saves space when you only want to carry one.
