How to weigh a carp the right way

A weigh sling is a soft, water-permeable sling that the fish is moved into straight from the unhooking mat. Wet the sling and zero the scales with the sling attached before weighing, so the reading shows the weight of the fish alone.

You get a more accurate reading when the scales hang steady. A weigh bar spreads the load across both hands, and a tripod holds the scales still so you can read the result calmly. Lift the fish only a little way off the ground and keep the unhooking mat underneath it.

A retention sling lets you keep a fish resting quietly in the water for a short time, for example while you wait for morning light for photos. Check the rules of the water, place the sling in deep enough and cool water, and keep the time short.

Rinse your slings after use and dry them before packing them away.
