A shock leader is a stronger length of line tied to the end of the main line to absorb the force of a heavy cast. In this group you will find monofilament shock leaders, braided shock leaders and tapered leaders. A leader makes long casting safer and also protects your line over rough ground.

When a heavy lead, a PVA bag or a spod is cast at full power, the first few metres of line take most of the strain. A shock leader prevents crack-offs on the cast and protects other anglers, boaters and birds from flying leads that break free.
A monofilament shock leader stretches and resists abrasion, so it is a natural partner for a mono main line and for swims with gravel, stones or mussels. A braided shock leader is thin and has no stretch, and it is often used on spod and marker reels loaded with braid.
A tapered leader gets gradually thicker from one end to the other. The thin end is tied to the main line, so the knot stays small and passes smoothly through the rod rings, while the thick end takes the jolt of the lead during the cast.
Make the leader long enough to leave a few turns on the spool when the rod is in the casting position. Check the knot before every cast and retie it as soon as it looks worn or damaged.
