Main Lines

A main line is chosen to suit the casting distance, the lakebed and any snags in the swim. In this group you will find monofilament, braided main lines and fluorocarbon main lines for carp fishing. Each type has its own strengths, and many carp anglers use different lines on different waters.

Mono, braid or fluorocarbon as your main line?

Monofilament is the most common main line in carp fishing. It stretches during the fight, is forgiving at close range and stands up well to abrasion. Mono suits most waters at medium range and is easy to handle for anglers at every level.

Braided main line is thin and has almost no stretch. It casts a long way and transmits takes and bottom feel clearly, but because it has no cushion you need to set the drag with care. Braid is usually fished with a shock leader to take the strain of the cast.

Fluorocarbon main line is dense and sinks to the bottom. It is hard to see in the water, which makes it a good choice for clear, heavily fished waters where the carp have become cautious and line-shy.

Choose the breaking strain to suit the snags in the swim and the size of the fish, and change your main line regularly, as UV light and abrasion weaken it over time.
