A combination rod handles both marker and spod work, so there is no need to carry two extra rods to the bank. The blank is stiff enough to cast a spod yet sensitive enough to feel the lake bed. This group includes full-length and compact combination rods.

If you fish short sessions or move swims often, a spod and marker rod lightens the load. Map the swim with the marker lead first, then clip on a spod and bait up with the same rod.
Test curves are usually around 5 lb, which is a compromise: a dedicated spod rod would be stiffer and a marker rod more sensitive. On most waters a combination rod is more than enough. 9 to 10 ft versions suit small waters and close range, 12 to 13 ft rods bigger venues.
A quick-change link on the end of the line speeds up switching from marker lead to spod. Use braid with a shock leader and pair the rod with a large, fast reel.
