How to kit out your barrow

A barrow bag gathers loose items that would otherwise fall off the load on the way. A cover keeps your kit dry in the rain and stops mud from splashing onto your bags and sleeping bag.

Straps hold the load firmly in place on a bumpy path or a steep bank. Tighten them so that the heaviest items sit lowest and close to the wheels, which keeps the barrow stable and easier to push.

A spare wheel is worth keeping in the car, since a puncture can stop the whole trip to the swim. Charge an electric barrow battery before every session, and carry a spare on long sessions and in cold weather, when battery performance drops.
