What should a halibut or heavy boat rod deliver?

A halibut rod is short and powerful, typically rated 30-50 lb. It must lift a big fish off the bottom and soak up long runs without folding over.

Deep drop rods are built for rigs of up to a kilo and an electric reel. A stiff blank and reinforced rings take the load at depths of hundreds of metres.

Check the handle length and the gimbal butt, which sits in a fighting belt or rod holder during the fight.

A gaff and a strong leader belong in every halibut kit. Match the rod to a reel whose drag and line capacity suit its rating.
