Artificial Boilies, Pellets & Maggots

Artificial hookbaits imitate boilies, pellets, maggots and other natural baits, but they do not break down or get picked apart by small fish. This section covers fake boilies, pellets and maggots plus buoyant zig foams and floating surface imitations. They suit bottom, zig and surface fishing.

When does a fake bait beat the real thing?

An imitation is the answer when crayfish or small fish strip real baits from the hair. Because an artificial boilie lasts all night, you can be confident the rig is still fishing even if you leave it out for hours.

Buoyant foam is the classic zig rig hookbait. A small piece sits at the end of a long hooklink and rises to the depth where the carp are cruising on warm days. Boost it with a glug or pick a bright colour for visibility.

Fake maggots and pellets are also handy for balancing: a buoyant imitation on top of a real bait lightens the whole presentation. Floating surface imitations come into their own in summer when carp are taking food off the top.
