This section covers electric reels for deep water boat fishing. They are used for halibut, redfish, big cod and coalfish in the deep fjords and offshore marks of Norway, where heavy rigs and fish must be lifted from hundreds of metres.

The key is the motor's pulling power and retrieve speed relative to the depth and the weight of your rig. Heavy halibut and deep drop rigs need a larger reel than cod fishing in medium depths.
Size the line capacity to the depth, and fill with thin braid so the spool holds enough. A line counter display shows your exact depth.
The reel runs off the boat's battery or a separate battery via a power cable. Check battery capacity and cable length before the trip.
Alongside the motor there is a manual handle, so you can still play a fish by hand. Rinse the reel and connectors in fresh water after use.
