Match and waggler rods are 3.6-4.2 m rods for float fishing with a reel. They cast a waggler accurately to 15-40 metres and suit roach, rudd, bream and ide on lakes and slow rivers.

A match rod is long and light so you can cast and strike at range on fine line. 13 ft is the classic length; 14 ft helps in deep water and with sliding floats, while 12 ft is handy on small venues.
Check the casting weight. A light 1-15 g rod suits small floats and fine hooklengths, while a 5-30 g model will push a big waggler a long way into a wind.
Action matters. A tip action picks up line quickly on the strike at range, while a softer through action protects light hooklengths close in.
A good match rod feels light in the hand all day, and closely spaced rings stop fine line sticking to the blank in wet weather.
