Big Game Rods

Big game rods are built for the largest fish in open water, such as tuna, marlin and big sharks. They are short and extremely strong, made to be fished with heavy multiplier reels. Use them for offshore trolling and for fighting fish from a belt or a fighting chair.

What a big game rod has to handle

In big game fishing one fish can take an hour or more, with the rod under full load the whole time. That makes the line class and build quality decisive. The common classes are 50, 80 and 130 lb, and the rod should match the reel and line you use.

A gimbal at the butt locks into the belt or chair so the rod cannot twist under pressure. Roller guides cut friction and wear as heavy line runs through them at high tension.

A short stand-up model gives leverage when you fight on your feet, while a longer rod suits trolling from the holder.

Look closely at the reel seat as well, because it takes a real beating.
