How to choose a bite indicator

A bite alarm screws onto a bankstick or rod rest, and the line runs over its sensor. When a fish moves the line, the alarm signals with sound and light. It is ideal when you fish with several rods, after dark or for long sessions.

A bobbin hangs on the line between the rod and the reel. It keeps the line under light tension and shows whether the line is lifting towards the rod or dropping back as a fish swims towards the bank. Used together with an alarm, a bobbin gives a clearer picture of what is happening at the hookbait.

A bite bell is a traditional, simple indicator that clips onto the rod tip and rings when a fish pulls. It suits a relaxed ledgering session by the lake. Other indicators, such as glow sticks for the rod tip, let you see the tip move at dusk.

Adjust the sensitivity of the alarm and the weight of the bobbin to the wind and current, and you will avoid false alarms.
