What should you look for in a mat or weigh sling?

Choose the mat to suit the fish you catch. A compact mat travels easily with a feeder angler, while bigger carp and bream need a longer, thicker base. Raised sides stop a lively fish from sliding onto the ground.

A weigh sling or match weigh bag is made for the scales: a mesh base lets water drain quickly, so you get a true reading and the fish goes back sooner.

Always wet the mat and sling before use. A damp surface protects the slime coat, which is the fish's main defence against infection.

Zero your scales with the wet sling hanging on them, so its weight does not end up in your total.
