How to choose a pole float or slider float

A pole float is light and sensitive, because the pole controls its position and the float never has to be cast. Its shape is chosen to suit the water: a slim body suits calm, shallow water, while a rounder body stays stable in wind and deeper water. Carrying capacity is matched to the depth and the bait.

A slider float runs freely on the line, and a stop knot tied on the line holds it at the depth you want. This lets you fish deep water, where a fixed float cannot be cast because there would be more line above the hook than the length of the rod.

A float adaptor lets you quickly switch to a lighter or heavier float without tying a new rig.

Shot a pole float precisely, so only its tip shows above the surface. With a slider, plumb the depth first and set the stop accordingly, then recheck it whenever you move swims.
