Freespool Reels

A freespool reel has a secondary rear drag that lets a fish take line freely while the rod sits in the rest. They suit ledgering, carp fishing and deadbaiting for pike.

How does a freespool reel work?

With freespool engaged, a secondary drag gives line under light tension. A fish can run with the bait and the rod will not be dragged off the rest. Turn the handle and the main drag engages for the fight.

Set the freespool tension for the flow and wind: too loose and line spills off, too tight and the fish feels resistance. The main drag is set separately for playing fish.

Sizes 3000-4000 suit feeder and ledger work, while 5000-6000 match carp rods. Also check line capacity and whether a spare spool is included.
