When do you need a specialist or freespool reel?

Specialist reels are built for targeting bigger fish. A sturdy body, larger spool and strong, smooth drag stand up to long fights, for example on a river or in deep water where a fish can take line.

A freespool reel lets a fish take line freely while the rod sits on the rest. When a fish picks up the bait and moves off, the rod stays put, and a turn of the handle re-engages the drag. Freespool is especially useful for legering for tench, bream and carp.

Choose the reel to suit your rod and line. A larger spool holds more of a heavier line, while a lighter reel balances a shorter rod.

The same reel also works for feeder fishing and livebaiting for pike when you want to be sure the rod cannot be pulled in on a strong take. It makes a sensible second reel to keep ready in your bag.
