At sea, trolling is done both along the coast and out on the open ocean in pursuit of big fish. In this group you will find trolling plugs and squid imitations as well as tuna and big game lures. They are built to swim properly at trolling speed and to withstand the pull of big fish.
Trolling plugs swim steadily behind the boat, and the size and shape of the lip decide how deep they dive. Squid imitations, or soft squids, are trolled on their own or as a daisy chain, and they imitate a key food source for many ocean species.
Big game lures are built for tuna, marlin and other large ocean fish. They often have a hard head and a trailing skirt that leaves a trail of bubbles in the water and draws fish from a distance. The lure is trolled on or near the surface at a relatively high speed.
Try your lures at different distances behind the boat and watch how they swim in the waves. Rig a big game lure with a strong leader and hook that are matched to the size of the target species.
Rinse lures and leaders in fresh water after every trip.
