Poppers & Stickbaits

Topwater fishing is one of the most spectacular forms of sea fishing, because the strike happens right in front of you. In this group you will find poppers, floating and sinking stickbaits, and GT and tuna topwater lures. They are built to withstand hard strikes from big, fast saltwater fish.

Popper or stickbait?

The concave face of a popper spits and bloops water when the lure is jerked. The noise and splash draw fish from a distance, and a popper is a good choice when fish are feeding on top or the surface is slightly choppy.

A stickbait has a streamlined shape and no diving lip. A floating stickbait skates across the surface from side to side, while a sinking model swims just below it and also works when fish will not come all the way up. Both rely on the angler's rod work for their action.

GT and tuna topwater lures are large and robust, and their bodies, hooks and split rings are built to take extremely powerful strikes. They call for a strong rod, a large reel and a heavy leader.

Let the fish turn with the lure before you come tight, because striking too early often pulls the lure straight out of its mouth.
