Plummets

A plummet tells you how deep your swim is before the first bait goes in. Use it to set float depth accurately on the pole, whip or waggler, and save a lot of guesswork and wasted casts.

How do you plumb the depth with a plummet?

Hook the plummet on or thread the line through it and lower the rig into the swim. If the float disappears, you are set too shallow, so slide it up. If it lies flat or stands high, slide it down until just the tip shows.

Once you have the depth, mark it on the rod or pole so you can return to it later. Plumb a little either side too, as the bottom can shelve sharply.

A cork-based plummet grips the hook securely without blunting the point. Heavier plummets cope with deep water and wind, lighter ones are ideal for the pole.
