How to set up a boat for trolling

Rod holders keep the rods firmly in place, and how you position them decides how many rods can fish at once without tangles. Choose a holder that fits your gunwale or rail and has an adjustable angle. A solid holder keeps the rod in place even on a violent strike.

Release clips hold the line on a downrigger cable, planer or outrigger and let it go when a fish strikes. The clip tension is set according to the drag of the lure and the target species, so that the line does not release for no reason.

Trolling swivels, snaps and leaders are built for constant pulling and line twist. A quality ball bearing swivel stops a spinning lure from twisting the line, and a strong snap makes changing lures quicker.

Check holder mounts and the springs on your release clips regularly, and replace worn parts before they fail on a fish.
