Heavy mono or wire leader cannot be knotted reliably, so in heavy sea fishing the loops are secured with crimps. You slide the crimp onto the leader, form the loop and squeeze the crimp shut with crimping pliers. Done right, it is one of the strongest connections in your rig.
The key is that the jaws of the pliers, the crimp and the leader diameter all match. A jaw that is too large leaves the connection loose, while one that is too small can damage the crimp or the leader. Many crimping pliers have several jaw sizes, so one tool covers a range of leaders.
Rigging tools help you shape loops, protect them with sleeves and put rigs together at home, so you are not fiddling with small parts on a moving deck. Always test every connection with a firm pull before use, because with a big fish on, a poor crimp is the first thing to fail.
