How to choose a rod case for a sea trip

Measure your longest rod at its transport length first. A telescopic travel tube adjusts to fit, so the rods cannot move around inside and the package stays as short as possible. A hard shell stands up to airport baggage handling.

A soft holdall is ideal for the car and the boat. It takes several rods, often with reels attached, so you can start fishing as soon as you arrive.

Check how many rods it holds and whether it has separate compartments. Strong zips, padding and a shoulder strap make it easier to carry.

Read your airline's rules on oversized baggage before you travel, and label the case with your name.
