Cleaning a firearm is simple

Cleaning and maintaining a firearm after a day of hunting or at the range takes only a few minutes. Always remember to check that the firearm is unloaded before maintenance!

Whenever you come indoors from outside, open the gun case or bag. Especially when bringing a firearm indoors from freezing temperatures, it is good to let it warm up and "sweat". Clean the firearm of loose debris before maintenance to avoid spreading debris inside the firearm. Remove the fore-end of the shotgun. Take some paper towels, spray some gun oil on them, and wipe the barrels of the shotgun or rifle as well as the receiver. This removes moisture and condensation or rainwater from the surface of the firearm. Cleaning the inside of the barrels is not as urgent - do it as soon as you can.

Start cleaning the inside of the barrel using a nylon brush or a cleaning rope or rod with a cotton cloth. The first cleanings are always done without oil! Gun oil is applied to the barrel only after no more residue comes out of the barrel. After this, replace the tip of the rod with a brass brush and spray a little gun oil into the barrel. Let the oil work for about 20 minutes, then brush the inside of the barrel with the brass brush from the chamber to the muzzle.

Then replace the tip of the rod with a loop tip and attach a suitably sized cloth strip (e.g., from an old t-shirt). This is used to remove loose dirt and oil from the barrel. Use multiple strips until the barrel is clean. Finally, replace the tip of the rod with a cotton brush, onto which you spray a little gun oil. Move the cotton brush back and forth a few times inside the barrel. When using gun oil, remember to use a moderate amount. An over-oiled firearm is a safety risk, as excess oil can impair the operation of the firearm's mechanism.

There are firearms with corrosion protection or coating, but despite this, it is always good to dry and clean the firearm after use.
