With a popping rod, the popper is worked with sharp sweeps so that it splashes and bloops on the surface and provokes a strike. The rod has to cast a heavy lure a long way and handle constant working all day.
Stickbait, GT and tuna rods are often more powerful. A stickbait swims on or just below the surface as the rod guides it, and when a GT or tuna strikes, the backbone of the rod has to stop the fish before it reaches the reef or strips too much line.
Choose the rod to match your lure weights and the size of your target fish, and pair it with a heavy duty spinning reel and thick braid. Use a tough leader, because reefs and coral wear through line quickly. A long handle gives leverage for casting and support during the fight, with the rod butt braced against your hip.
