A jigging rod is built to work a metal jig vertically beneath the boat. In this group you will find slow pitch rods as well as speed and vertical jigging rods. The styles differ in rhythm, and that is why the rods have different actions.
In slow pitch jigging, the jig is lifted with short, rhythmic strokes and the flexible action of the rod does much of the work. As the rod recovers, the jig flutters and spins on the drop, and fish often strike at exactly that moment. Slow pitch rods are short and light, and they are usually paired with a conventional reel.
Speed and vertical jigging is faster and more physical. The jig is ripped and wound up at pace to trigger predatory fish into chasing it. The rod needs to be stiffer and more powerful to handle the rhythm and the fight with a big fish.
Choose the rod to suit your jig weights and the depth you fish. The rated jig weight tells you which jigs the rod is designed for, and deep water or strong current calls for a heavier jig. Pair the rod with braid and a suitable reel so the jig action comes through properly and you feel every bite.
