The Marttiini fire steel set includes a fire stick and a steel striker. A fire steel is a practical fire-starting tool that is worth carrying whenever you are out in nature. If your matches get wet or you run out of lighter fluid, you can always get a fire going with it. The fire stick provides a hot spark even in the most severe weather conditions. Suitable tinder includes, for example, birch bark, dry moss or lichen, finely split dry twigs, feather sticks carved from dry wood, and paper. In the Nordic countries, fire steels were used from around 380-470 AD until the 1800s, when matches became common. Modern magnesium fire steels have been in use for a long time. Magnesium is a light, bright silvery-white alkaline earth metal and an essential mineral for humans and animals.
Using the fire stick
When making a fire with a fire stick, prepare a sheltered spot for the tinder, such as a pit dug in the snow or a similar windbreak. If needed, you can carefully scrape some magnesium powder from the fire stick onto the tinder, as this makes lighting even easier. For the fire stick to work properly, it is important that the material is hardened just right.
Pull the striker or the back of your knife firmly down the length of the stick to release a shower of sparks, and direct the sparks straight into your tinder. Once the tinder has caught fire, gradually feed it into a proper campfire by steadily adding suitable dry material.
