Pulsar Thermion 3 LRF XR60 is a third-generation Thermion thermal riflescope that combines long-reaching 4-40x magnification, a 640x480 pixel thermal sensor, a large 60 mm F1.0 objective, a laser rangefinder integrated into the body and ballistic calculation. The Thermion 3 is built in a metal body shaped like a traditional riflescope, so it mounts in standard 30 mm scope rings and its operating logic resembles a conventional optical riflescope as closely as possible.
The XR60 is the Thermion 3 option for users who emphasise a long magnification range, good thermal sensitivity and precise observation of more distant targets. Its uncooled 640x480 pixel thermal sensor uses a 12 µm pixel pitch. The manufacturer's stated sensor NETD is under 30 mK and the system NETD under 18 mK. A low system NETD helps distinguish small temperature differences, for example in humid, foggy or cool weather, when the temperature difference between the target and its surroundings can be small.
The optics of the XR60 are based on a 60 mm F1.0 objective. The large objective and the fast F1.0 design efficiently gather thermal radiation onto the sensor. Base magnification is 4x and digital magnification reaches up to 40x. The manufacturer's stated field of view is 7.3 degrees, or 12.8 metres at 100 metres. This combination makes the XR60 a particularly natural choice for open fields, forest clearings and other situations where targets are usually observed from longer distances.
Magnification on the Thermion 3 is adjusted with a rotating ring like on a traditional riflescope. There is no need to change magnification through menus; it can be changed quickly in the scope's normal operating position. The focus control is located in the middle of the body, and the controls are designed to be used even in the dark and with gloves on.
The manufacturer's stated detection range of the Thermion 3 LRF XR60 for a heat source is up to 2950 metres for a standard-size target. Detection range is not the same as a safe identification or shooting distance; it describes detecting a heat source in ideal conditions.
In the new Thermion 3 generation, the laser rangefinder is integrated directly into the scope body. It is not located in front of the thermal objective, so the path of thermal radiation through the F1.0 objective remains unobstructed. The rangefinder has a maximum range of 1200 metres and a manufacturer's stated accuracy of +/- 1 metre. Single measurement, continuous SCAN measurement and the THD function, which takes the true horizontal distance into account, are available.
The rangefinder is complemented by built-in ballistic calculation. A ballistic profile created in the Stream Vision Ballistics app can be transferred to the scope. When the distance is measured, the scope can show a corrected point of aim calculated from the ballistic profile. The system also takes shooting-angle data into account and makes it easier to estimate the correct point of aim at varying distances.
The scope can store 10 zeroing profiles, each of which can contain several zeroing distances. This makes it possible to store settings for the same scope for example for several rifles or different cartridges. 10 electronic reticles are available, including options that scale with magnification. A scaling reticle works in practice on a similar principle to a first focal plane reticle in a conventional riflescope, so the reticle proportions are kept when magnification is changed.
Three zeroing methods are offered: One Shot Zero, a magnified zeroing mode that makes fine adjustment easier, and Freeze Zero, in which the sight picture can be frozen during zeroing. This makes adjustments easier when it is not possible to keep the rifle completely still during the entire adjustment.
The thermal image can be adapted to conditions with three sensitivity levels. Normal suits clear conditions, High general use and Ultra-High situations where temperature differences are small, for example due to fog, rain, humidity or cold weather. A smoothing filter that reduces image noise is also available.
The XR60 has nine thermal colour palettes: White Hot, Black Hot, Green, Red Hot, Red Monochrome, Rainbow, Ultramarine, Violet and Sepia. The user can choose the option that best suits the environment and their own way of viewing.
Two Picture-in-Picture modes make it easier to combine a precise aiming view with following the surroundings. The rectangular PiP shows a magnified view together with the rest of the image, while the circular PiP magnifies the area around the point of aim while keeping the wide overall picture.
The image is shown on a 2560x2560 pixel AMOLED display. The eye relief is 65 mm, which improves comfort and leaves more room between the eye and the scope, also on rifles with heavier recoil. The manufacturer states that the scope withstands recoil energy of up to 6000 joules.
The XR60 has 128 GB of internal memory for photos and videos. Videos and photos are recorded at 1440x1080 pixels. The device also supports recoil-activated video recording, so shooting situations can be recorded automatically without starting the recording manually.
With the Stream Vision 2 app, the thermal image can be streamed to a mobile device, recordings transferred and the scope's software updated. Stream Vision Ballistics in turn handles creating ballistic profiles and transferring them to the scope. Connections work via Bluetooth and 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
The power system uses an internal battery and a replaceable APS5 4900 mAh battery. The replaceable external battery can be swapped for a charged spare during use. The device can also be powered from an external power source via the USB Type-C Power Delivery connection. In Pulsar's current materials, both a technical value of 8.5 hours and a claim of up to 14 hours appear for the XR60's operating time, so the actual operating time depends on conditions and the functions used.
The metal-bodied XR60 is IP67 protected against dust and water. The manufacturer's stated operating temperature range is -25...+50 °C. The scope measures approximately 443 x 96 x 76 mm and weighs about 1.25 kg.
The Thermion 3 LRF XR60 is the right choice especially when the most important features are a large 4-40x magnification range, good thermal sensitivity and long-distance observation. Compared to the XT60, the XR60 has a higher base magnification and narrower field of view, so its character leans more towards open terrain and longer observation distances. The XT60 in turn offers considerably higher sensor resolution and about twice the field of view.
