A dry fly imitates an insect floating on the water's surface

Dry flies (nicknamed "floaters") mimic insects floating on the water's surface, such as various caddisflies, mayflies, and stoneflies. In addition to these, flies can imitate terrestrial insects that have fallen into the water, such as ants, wasps, or beetles. Floaters are popular among many anglers because strikes with them are often spectacular, occurring right at the surface.

The most important feature of a dry fly is its buoyancy. Generally, dry flies use rooster hackles, CDC feathers, or deer hair, all of which have excellent floating properties. Often, it is advisable to treat dry flies with various floatants, especially when fishing in stronger currents that almost force the fly underwater.
