Saxa was founded in 2015 when we at Ruoto came up with the idea of designing and manufacturing our own rods. The idea came from a clear need we recognized both while serving customers and through our own time on the water. In our view many rods sold in the Nordic countries simply weren’t good enough, and especially not designed for targeting our species with modern techniques. Or if they were, their prices were sky-high...
We started designing rods because our team already had years of experience with fishing tackle, and especially the know-how gained from day-to-day sales work. The beginning was long and rocky, but after the first year the pieces started to fall into place and the first Saxa rods were introduced to customers in 2016. We began close cooperation in rod design with one of the world’s leading rod factories, and in hindsight we’ve often been amazed at how we young guys managed to convince the factory to commit to future collaboration.
The Saxa Shade 8'2'' 50-150g launched in late 2017. The rod series was a success. The Finnish market wasn’t used to seeing a pike rod this sensitive and lightweight. Not at this price point, either—our competitive edge on price was strong because we bought the rods directly from the factory without middlemen.
Development continued without pause and, inspired by the success of the Saxa Shade rod, we expanded the range in 2019 to include jig rods and a broader selection of pike rods. Saxa Shade G2 was followed by updated Saxa Reed and Spectre series. The lineup began to cover multiple price points, and word of our rods’ unbeatable price-to-performance ratio spread rapidly throughout our customer base.
Now in 2026 Saxa is clearly our best-selling rod brand. Each year we sell nearly 6,000 Saxa high-quality casting rods. Almost our entire staff fishes with Saxa rods, and we continuously gather information for product development of future models both from our own team and from enthusiastic customers.
In the 2020s, alongside rods we have also focused on developing high-quality fishing electronics, including batteries, electric motors, and sonar displays. Saxa’s selection currently includes excellent price-to-quality products that enable even the most active anglers to outfit their fishing boat for serious use. Saxa GPS bow-mounted motors—known colloquially as “sky anchors”—are extremely popular, and for good reason: motors of this level simply haven’t been seen at this price before.
