Many small fish like to swim in tight schools. They know it's not wise to stray from the school, as being separated means being at risk of falling prey to predators. However, pike, trout, salmon, and perch have clever ways of breaking up schools. The attack is two-stage. The predator strikes forcefully straight into the school of fish, attempting to incapacitate some of the individuals in the school. Usually, a small fish gets injured and remains in place floundering. In the second stage of the hunting ritual, the predator pounces on the injured fish. This is why, for example, pike don't always bite on the first attempt. They may strike at the lure without even opening their mouths. This is an exciting moment for the angler. Here's a tip on how to entice a poking pike: make a couple of quick turns of the reel handle and then stop reeling completely. The pike thinks the target is injured and strikes to swallow it.
